Notecard
2020 Day 29
“Where Does the Time Go?”: magazine collage in my art journal
During this extended period of staying home, some people are bored, some people are busy… I am super busy!
2020 Day 28: Grrrrr!
“F$@#&king Tape Gun”: ink and acrylic in my art journal
If there is anything more frustrating than a tape gun, I hope never to encounter it.
2020 Day 27
I set a timer for 10 minutes and did a blind contour drawing of a little box of bric-a-brac on my studio table.
2020 Day 26
Some bedtime improvisations on a notecard.
2020 Day 25: Sign of the Times
Pencil drawing in my art journal
This morning I sewed a couple of cloth masks, and this evening I sketched them.
2020 Day 24
Collage on a notecard
2020 Day 23: More weirdness
Collage on a notecard
When you just randomly stick down little scraps, the result is, well, random. What do you see?
2020 Day 22: Last-minute, lacklustre
I left my art of the day until the end of the day… always a mistake. By the time I had spent hours working on my “Time to Part with My Art” studio sale, I was spent! I could only muster the energy for some one-minute sketches. My sketching pen ran out halfway through the fourth one and I switched to ballpoint!
2020 Day 21
Here’s a bit of weirdness on a notecard: a piece of an old watercolour painting, overlaid with rice paper, plus an image transfer (fish) and more tiny scraps (suggesting little fish).
2020 Day 20
This evening I had a date to play Upwords with my pal Peter on Google hangouts. I sketched the computer screen between turns. (That’s me on the bottom right.)
2020 Day 19
A whimsical cut paper collage on a notecard.
2020 Day 18
Collage on a notecard
2020 Day 17: Souvenir
“Ginger”: pencil sketch in my art journal
I did this drawing of Ginger, my childhood teddy bear, to remember him by, because after hanging on to him for 50 years or so, today I chucked him out.
2020 Day 16
I made a notecard using scraps of cut-up watercolour paintings and Lucille’s fancy yarns.
2020 Day 15: Simplify!
Watercolour plus cut paper collage, in my art journal
It’s a mantra among art teachers when it comes to composition: simplify, simplify, simplify. There’s nothing like trying to render a scene in cut paper to make you do that. I spotted this farm on my drive in the country yesterday and immediately wanted to try this. Here is the photo I took, for comparison:
Coincidentally, the last cut paper collage I made (months ago) depicted Kawhi Leonard holding his MVP trophy at the victory parade after the Toronto Raptors won the NBA championship. The entire 2019 playoff run has been shown on TV over the past few weeks, and tonight they’re showing the last, title-clinching game. Here’s to our champs!
2020 Day 14: A change of scenery
Ink sketch in my art journal
Today I managed to get out of not only the house, but the city. A nice drive in the country… and no traffic! I am always drawn to farm buildings with the sun gleaming off their roofs.
2020 Day 13: In Perspective
This notecard was made with a piece of the same watercolour painting from Day 7, plus a piece leftover from an old CAA Magazine Challenge collage. An unusual combination, but the perspective was right, so I couldn't resist!
2020 Day 12
Another collage of tiny scraps on a note card.
2020 Day 11: To the Rescue
“Summer Woods”: watercolour mounted on wood panel, 8 x 8”
Here’s another case where cropping rescued an unsuccessful painting. I cut this 8 x 8” section out of a 12 x 16” painting that I didn’t like, and mounted it on a little wooden panel.
That kind of felt like cheating, though, so I also did a page of one-minute sketches. Out of practice here too! I have a new tool, though, that I didn’t have when I used to do these back in 2016-17: “Hey, Siri, set a timer for one minute.”
