A few days ago, I set out to make a birthday card for my lifelong friend, Susan (she wouldn't want me to say "old" friend!), and instead made a collage called "Friendship Tree."
I never did send a card, which is a shame, because she never fails to send one to me. But today, on her birthday, I made this drawing from an old (and very small) photograph of nine-year-old Susan squinting in the sun by the fence in her backyard in Thunder Bay. For the title, I used what is written on the back of the photo in my young handwriting.
